“Oh my goodness, girl,” Kolton groaned. He placed his empty plate on the coffee table and leaned back against the couch.

They had settled in Ellie’s living room on the floor to enjoy their meal and the fire. They had pushed the coffee table off to the side where they could enjoy the view of the roaring fire. The orange flames were bright while the heat warmed the room.

“What?” Ellie placed her plate on the table next to his. She reached for her drink she had made herself. She had mixed her vodka with some cranberry juice while Kolton drank his neat. She took a sip before turning those big brown eyes on him. “You didn’t like it?”

“I just about licked my plate clean.” He chuckled. He picked up his glass and took a small sip.

The woman certainly had skills in the kitchen. It was well worth the wait. This was one of the most heartiest and savory meals he’d had in a long while.

With the electricity still out, they had pulled back the drapes that covered her large bay window to allow them to watch the snow fall. Mother Nature was not being kind to their small town. Snow flurries swarmed outside. All of Kolton’s hard work of clearing their driveways was for naught. Their yards were buried once again. At least another foot of snow had fallen since he had arrived, and it didn’t appear to be slowing down. It looked as if Langdale was going to be under snow for Christmas.

The food was delicious, and the conversation between them flowed. Kolton was fascinated by the tales Ellie had to share. Some of the stories had him laughing until tears formed in his eyes. He had thought life as a cop was never dull, but he was certainly wrong. He had much respect for teachers of young children.

“I did notice your finger gliding around it. There is more in there. I somehow cooked enough for about ten people, but it only us two.” She chuckled.

“No. I’m good. I can’t let my uniform get too tight.” He patted his flat abdomen. Kolton took care of himself and enjoyed working out. This meal truly wouldn’t hurt his exercise regime. But if he ate like this every day, he’d have to add at least another day to his workout.

Kolton also didn’t miss the way Ellie’s gaze dropped to his stomach and lingered for a moment then flicked over toward the fire.

“You look fine in your uniform,” she said.

Kolton grinned and reached over for her hand.

“So you are stalking me,” he teased.

Ellie rolled her eyes and released a heavy sigh.

“Here you go again,” she said. She took a heft gulp of her drink before settling the glass on the table beside her plate.

He entwined their fingers and tugged her closer to him. There had just been too much room in between them.

She didn’t hesitate to move closer. “Sir, we are neighbors. How would I not see you in your uniform when you go to work? You just don’t see me when you are coming or going.
